How do I stay motivated?
Today I was asked to speak for a group of trainees in our organization.
One of the questions asked was about how to stay motivated or how to motivate a team member. My response was to simply remind them of the current MATH of economics all around them. My idea for motivation was to show them last Sundays Gleaner article. When 600 persons apply for 10 minimum wage jobs at a bakery you know there is a problem and you better be doing something else.
The gleaner articles has a great quote in in:
“The Government has said that it is interested in retraining for a different market. That, I think, is a positive. (But) workers have to take some responsibility. I have constantly preached for workers to have a Plan B for employment. The cheese will move and they need to be proactive. Start your own business, go back to school and retrain,” Lambert Brown, president of the University and Allied Workers’ Union
My research on Jamaica shows that since 1977 wages in Jamaica have approximately doubled. the challenge is the cost of good and services have gone up four fold. The same is true when I look around North America.
How much motivation do people need to get up and move on. My though is they don’t need motivation, they need guidance. My talk was mostly about getting involved with people and systems of business that can guide you. There are more opportunities than you can shake a stick at, the problem is how do you know which one to run with and what to do with it when you have it?
Answer: have a group of mentors who have gone before you and have a vested interest in your success.
