Really funny but true…

•October 31, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I read a really funny quote the other day which I just had to share.

“Looking for a good job is like scrambling to get the best deck chair on the Titanic”.

haha, isn’t that great! It’s amazing how many persons I run into who are “looking for a better job”, or are going back to school to upgrade their skills to get a better job, or even those think they have a good job. They don’t understand that a job is a sinking ship. Today on the job the yearly cost of living increase doesn’t even keep up with inflation. Here in Jamaica inflation is up around 24% on food and 21% on bills and utilities… and what are most persons getting at work? A wage freeze! When I worked as the head of Business Intelligence for Cable & Wireless I got an 8% increase. Not to mention I lost 30% on the devaluation of the dollar to the CAD.

All that and I haven’t even touched lack of job security (come on there is no such wordage as Job Security these days – see earlier post if you doubt)… I don’t know… to me it’s as plain as day JOB = Titanic.

trendwatching.com’s February 2009 Trend Briefing covering GENERATION G

Has there ever been more urgency for corporations to ditch the greed and embrace generosity? After all, giving is the new taking, and sharing is the new giving.

Here’s and interesting read. – Brett

How do I stay motivated?

•January 16, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Today I was asked to speak for a group of trainees in our organization.

One of the questions asked was about how to stay motivated or how to motivate a team member. My response was to simply remind them of the current MATH of economics all around them. My idea for motivation was to show them last Sundays Gleaner article. When 600 persons apply for 10 minimum wage jobs at a bakery you know there is a problem and you better be doing something else.

The gleaner articles has a great quote in in:

“The Government has said that it is interested in retraining for a different market. That, I think, is a positive. (But) workers have to take some responsibility. I have constantly preached for workers to have a Plan B for employment. The cheese will move and they need to be proactive. Start your own business, go back to school and retrain,” Lambert Brown, president of the University and Allied Workers’ Union

My research on Jamaica shows that since 1977 wages in Jamaica have approximately doubled. the challenge is the cost of good and services have gone up four fold. The same is true when I look around North America.

How much motivation do people need to get up and move on. My though is they don’t need motivation, they need guidance. My talk was mostly about getting involved with people and systems of business that can guide you. There are more opportunities than you can shake a stick at, the problem is how do you know which one to run with and what to do with it when you have it?

Answer: have a group of mentors who have gone before you and have a vested interest in your success.

I don’t need a business, I have a good job.

Now is the best time ever to be helping people get control of their finances and start working with companies that want to keep their costs efficient.

I don’t think most people really understand the changing times and what it means for them economically and where the opportunities are. Here are some headlines that passed through my rss feeds today. Keep in mind these are only headlines that came out TODAY! I can’t imagine home many more there have been over the last 30 days!

  • Report: Oracle cuts workforce by 500
  • Nortel files for bankruptcy
  • Heavy layoffs at PlanetOut
  • Google lays off 100 recruiters
  • Microsoft expected to announce layoffs
  • Motorola plans another round of layoffs
  • Seagate stuns with layoffs, pay cuts, CEO replacement
  • IBM Employees Buzzing About Layoff Rumors(estimated 16,000)
  • Random House Inc. confirms additional layoffs
  • Pfizer to Cut Up to 800 Scientist Jobs
  • Department store chain Gottschalks Inc. put itself up for sale and filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy

There are a lot of people out there who need a new look at income and how they provide for their family, let alone build something for their future.

Now is the time to get out and open our mouths and teach. There is a better way.
